Brain disorders, with their profound effects on individuals and their loved ones, hold a significant place in our collective consciousness. Among these, stroke stands as a particularly critical condition, demanding urgent attention and specialised care. World Brain Day, which falls on 22nd July every year, serves as a way to raise awareness about brain disorders and the importance of seeking medical attention promptly.

We spoke to our expert Dr Vipul Gupta, Director, Stroke Unit, Artemis Hospital, Gurugram, who explained brain disorders and their effects on our lives.

Brain disorders, including stroke, aneurysms, and Arteriovenous malformations (AVMs) can have devastating effects on individuals and their families. These conditions demand immediate medical attention and specialised care.

What Is Stroke

Dr Gupta said, “A stroke is a medical emergency that occurs when there is a sudden interruption of blood flow to the brain, leading to the death of brain cells. This lack of oxygen and nutrients can result from a blocked blood vessel (ischemic stroke) or a ruptured blood vessel causing bleeding in the brain (haemorrhagic stroke).”

According to a study by the Public Health Foundation of India, The main causes of neurological illnesses in India are epilepsy, headache conditions, and stroke. 7.4% of all deaths in India in 2019 were due to stroke, which claimed almost seven lakh lives.

Impact Of Stroke

Dr Gupta said, “The impact of stroke can be profound, affecting not only the individual but also their families and communities. Depending on the area of the brain affected, stroke can result in a wide range of impairments, such as paralysis, loss of motor skills, difficulty in speech and language, memory problems, and even emotional and behavioural changes. Rehabilitation and support are often required to help stroke survivors regain functionality and adjust to their new normal.”

These breakthroughs have improved the precision and effectiveness of treatments, enabling medical professionals to offer targeted interventions with reduced risks and faster recovery times. Furthermore, over 80% of patients can be successfully cured if they seek medical attention early.
