The thyroid gland plays a crucial role in regulating metabolism and energy production in the body. Located in the front of your neck, just below the Adam's apple, it produces hormones, which control various bodily functions, including heart rate, temperature, and the rate at which cells convert nutrients into energy. When there is a problem with the thyroid gland, it can lead to various health issues due to the disruption of hormone production and regulation.

Speaking with the OnlyMyHealth team, Dr Usman Yadwad, visiting Consultant Endocrinologist, KLE-Suchirayu Hospital (A Unit of HCG), Hubli, lists down certain symptoms of thyroid disorders and why it leads to excessive daytime lethargy.

Types Of Thyroid Disorders

The most common thyroid disorders include:

Hypothyroidism: This condition occurs when the thyroid gland does not produce enough thyroid hormones, leading to a decrease in metabolism and energy levels.

Hyperthyroidism: Hyperthyroidism is the opposite of hypothyroidism, characterised by an overactive thyroid gland, leading to the excessive production of thyroid hormones, which can accelerate metabolism.

Thyroiditis: It refers to inflammation of the thyroid gland, which can cause temporary hyperthyroidism due to the release of stored hormones, followed by hypothyroidism as the gland's function is impaired.

Goitre: This condition is characterised by the enlargement of the thyroid gland, often caused by iodine deficiency.

Thyroid nodules: These are lumps or growths in the thyroid gland, which can be benign or malignant and may require further evaluation to rule out cancer.

Thyroid cancer: It is a relatively rare condition where abnormal cells in the thyroid gland grow and multiply uncontrollably, potentially spreading to other parts of the body.

Common Symptoms Of Thyroid Disorder

Dr Yadwad says, thyroid disorders can manifest in various ways, and the symptoms may vary depending on whether the thyroid gland is overactive (hyperthyroidism) or underactive (hypothyroidism). Some common symptoms of thyroid disorder include:

Hypothyroidism

  • Fatigue and weakness
  • Weight gain
  • Cold intolerance
  • Constipation
  • Dry skin and hair
  • Muscle aches and stiffness
  • Depression or mood swings
  • Memory and concentration issues

Hyperthyroidism

  • Unexplained weight loss
  • Rapid or irregular heartbeat
  • Sweating and sensitivity to heat
  • Nervousness and anxiety
  • Tremors in hands
  • Difficulty sleeping
  • Increased bowel movements
  • Changes in menstrual patterns (for women)

Why Thyroid Problems Cause Excessive Daytime Drowsiness?

According to Dr Yadwad, thyroid disorders can cause excessive daytime drowsiness due to their impact on the body's metabolism and hormone regulation.

A study published in the Journal General Hospital Psychiatry, hypothyroidism is linked hypersomnia, a sleep disorder characterised by excessive daytime sleepiness, despite getting an adequate amount of sleep at night.

“The thyroid gland plays a crucial role in producing hormones that help regulate energy levels and metabolism. When there is an imbalance in thyroid hormone production, such as in hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid), the body's overall metabolic rate decreases. As a result, individuals may experience fatigue, lethargy, and excessive daytime drowsiness, even after getting adequate sleep at night,” Dr Yadwad explains.

Conclusion

Thyroid problems can lead to various symptoms, including excessive tiredness. However, one particular symptom does not necessarily mean a thyroid issue. The best way to find out is by talking to an endocrinologist or a healthcare provider, who can help confirm the cause of your condition. Ensure that you do not self-diagnose and make rash decisions.
